Guess where my package is now. :D It’s supposed to go from the UK to NY. Where do you think it is now? Hint: What do you think is the most logical direction/route? The correct answer is: PARIS!

Original post from earlier:
Split window screenshot to hide the tracking number, just focus on the top. I have a package coming from Gateshead, Great Breakfast. FedEx says it shipped at 2:00 pm, which was 45 minutes ago.
They say it’ll be delivered to me in NY, USA by 10:30 am. That’s 45 minutes from now.
How is this possible?
The original delivery estimate was Wednesday, so I don’t know how/why they could cut it down 2 days if it seems way more likely to get pushed back again.

You don’t know the ingenuity of the Gateshead people, that parcel will be on a giant trebuchet right now and ready to launch. The faster they fling that parcel over the gigantic pond to North America, the faster they get their sweet sweet crack money. I should know, I live 20 minutes away.

Delivering things on a giant trebuchet needs to happen.

Just stick a mattress and some pillows outside your front door before it lands.

Better than the US postal service then.
I sent a package stateside (NY) from Carlisle, England via Royal Mail, the next day it was at Heathrow, the day after it was at Kennedy Airport, where it sat for five days.
That’s one day to do 256miles north to south of England, one day to do 3,446miles from Heathrow to Kennedy and then five days to do 18miles from Kennedy to the place in NY.

True but it’s great when it goes great such as ordering an item at 3pm in the evening, told it’ll take three days but arrives at 11am the following day from 150miles away. It makes me wonder if it was delivered by postal service or the person had had a bit of a sleep and then just got in the car and drove it direct to my door.

Gateshead > Wherever the FedEx main Euro hub is (I would guess near London or Paris, but I could be way off) > Indy (FedEx main U.S. hub) > Newark > Greater NY sorting facility > Sorting facility that covers Brooklyn > You
That’s my guess.

That sounds like customs to me. I regularly have rally car models shipped to me from the UK, always via Royal Mail-to-USPS. Sometimes I’ll get them within a week, sometimes it takes as long as a month. The difference is always because of how long it sat in the US Customs warehouse.

I’ve had packages skip states to come to me before (MD to VA via NC, for example), but that’s odd. When I get stuff sent FedEx from the UK it usually goes directly from Heathrow to the US.

How the hell is that possible. I thought the two main centres in the U.K. (West Midlands and Heathrow) would of had direct freight flights to New York and Washington (somewhere or other), maybe it’s cheaper to consolidate it in Paris with items coming from other parts of central Europe on one aircraft but can’t see how.

It works the same way flying as a person does. Flying direct from/to every point costs too much and needs too many resources, so instead they have a handful of locations where they gather everything together and send it all on a single plane. Virtually every FedEx package going from Europe to North America goes out of that Paris location. It’s the difference between them needing one plane and charging you $XX.XX for shipping and needing a dozen planes and charging you $XXX.XX for shipping.

If Fed-Ex are doing that, I think I’ll stick with Royal Mail.
